Black History Month

Over the last 6 days of Black History Month, we’re sharing 6 historic figures you should know. Earlier, you learned about Misty Copeland and Elijah “The Real” McCoy. Today, meet Mary Fields. “Stagecoach Mary” is recognized as the first Black woman courier for the US Postal Service. Mary was born a slave in 1832, but managed to outbid several white men in Montana for the lucrative “star route” only 19 years after the abolishment of slavery. She also owned a restaurant, a laundry service, and worked as the forewoman of a local farm. When she died at 82 in 1914, her funeral was one of the largest the town had ever seen. In the film They Die By Dawn (2013), she is played by Erykah Badu.
