Black History Month
Over the last 6 days of Black History Month, we’re sharing 6 historic figures you should know. Earlier, you learned about Misty Copeland, Elijah “The Real” McCoy and Mary Fields. Today meet Henrietta Lacks (born Loretta Pleasant). Her cancer cells are the source of the H.e.L.a. cell line: the most important cell line in medical history. An immortalized cell line will reproduce indefinitely under specific conditions. The average cell will die after about 2 days. In 1951, her cells were harvested without consent from a tumor biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer. Neither she nor her family were compensated for the cell’s extraction or use. Even after her passing later that year, the doctor continued to culture her cells from her corpse. During the 67 years later, scientists worldwide have reproduced over 20 tons of her cells to create vaccines, and countless other scientific pursuits. But her cells are also used in non-medical, commercial testing on various other products.
