Black History Month

Over the last 6 days of Black History Month, we’re sharing 6 historic figures you should know. Earlier, you learned about Misty Copeland, Elijah “The Real” McCoy, Mary Fields, Henrietta Lacks and the N’Nonmiton Warriors. Today meet Queen Lili?uokalani, the first queen and last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, ruling from January 29, 1891, until the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii on January 17, 1893. “Now to avoid any collision of armed forces, and perhaps the loss of life, I do this under protest and impelled by said force yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representatives and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the Constitutional Sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands.”
