The girl’s and boy’s Madill hockey teams both came home with gold medals from the 5th annual Wes for youth hockey tournament in Walkerton held on Wednesday and Thursday this past week. The teams played extremely well and represented the school with pride.
High School students from across Grey and Bruce and some traveling from as far away as St. Catherines and North Bay participated. There were 16 teams, 10 boys and 6 girl teams.
The goal of the two day event is to play some competitive hockey while helping to raise awareness about youth mental health and well being through the Wes For Youth Foundation. The tournament serves as a memorial to 16 year old Sacred Heart High School student Wes Cameron who tragically took his own life in 2011.
The Wes For Youth foundation was born out of this tragedy and the not for profit organization provides free online professional counseling to youth struggling with mental health issues such as: suicidal thoughts, depression and anxiety.
