Matt Dinning Memorial Junior Boys Cup

May 03

Despite the rain and snow on Friday, the Junior Boys Rugby team had a very successful day at the Matt Dinning Memorial Junior Boys Cup here at Madill. The boys played their first game against St. Anne’s. Matt Smith scored twice, while Ryan Stulp and Zach Watson each scored to secure a 20-0 win. The second game was a re-match with Grey Highlands. After a close exhibition match a few weeks ago, the team geared up for a tough match. The boys were down a try at one point in the game, but persevered in the last minute of the game to win by a score of 15 – 10. Tries were scored by Matt Smith and Brody Ten Pas. This win moved the team into the final match against Medway for the 4th year in a row. It was a tough game that resulted in a 5 – 5 tie. Madill tied the game on the last play in regular time due to skilled kick by Bret Harris and the speed of Tanner Kirkby to get to the ball and score the try. Unfortunately, Madill was defeated in sudden death kicks. The championship plaque and runner-up plaques were presented by Lincoln and Brendan Dinning. Coach Konarski presented Josh Raynard with the Tournament MVP plaque. Special thanks to Mr Jones for making such a great tournament happen here at Madill and to Mrs. Gerth and her team of students for hosting the BBQ. Last but not least, congratulations to the Madill Junior Boys Rugby team for a great day of rugby.
